Frankfurt Airport (FRA) has the tightest physical integration of any major European hub. The long-distance train station sits directly beneath Terminal 1, reachable without leaving the terminal building. Passengers who miss a train because their inbound flight ran late occupy a legally ambiguous position that most do not discover until they are standing at a departures board watching their connection disappear.

When you have an integrated ticket — an airline itinerary that includes a rail leg sold under a single booking or codeshare agreement — EU Regulation 261/2004 may extend its protections to the onward journey.   1. Check your rail ticket’s conditions before you board. Flexible fare classes on DB, SNCF, and most intercity operators allow same-day rebooking at no charge. Saver fares typically do not. Knowing which you hold determines your next move.

  2. Contact the rail carrier by phone or app while still airborne, or immediately on landing. NS, DB, and Eurostar all offer rebooking assistance when a delay is documented. Waiting until you reach the platform is too late for most operators’ rebooking windows.

  3. Collect documentation. Request written confirmation of the flight delay reason and duration from the gate agent or via the airline’s app. This becomes the evidence base for any EU261 submission or rail rebooking appeal.

  4. Do not assume the train will wait. Unlike airline gates, which sometimes hold for late-arriving connections within a single itinerary, rail operators run independent schedules with hard departure times.

  5. Escalate at the rail desk, not the airline desk. The carrier with the next actionable step is the rail operator. The airline’s liability ends at the destination airport.
